What is French for falling in love?
They say love smells as sweet as a red rose in bloom, but Del would tell anyone that true love can’t be bottled – it’s beautiful and unique to everyone…even herself. With everything on the line for her future, can Del really let a little attraction get in the way of securing her dreams?
Del’s dream is to open her own perfume shop boutique and her twin was supporting her all the way and just when she thought that her dreams are within her reach, her sister backed out because she’ll soon start her own life with her fiancée.
Del then left her hometown to be one of the participants in a perfume competition by Leclére Parfumerie in Paris. This trip, if she succeeds, will give her another chance to make her dreams become a reality. But arriving to Paris opened her eyes and a lot of doors for Del. She met her fellow contestants and realised that while she got the gifts of being a perfumer because of her Nan (grandmother) she also realised that it’s not enough. This is, after all, the battle of the best of the best.
"That’s what I loved about perfumery, its ability to free a person just on scent alone, transport you elsewhere while you got on with the business of living."
As she competes, she also met the potential love of her life – Sebastien who’s also the sole heir of Leclére Parfumerie. Torn between the new-found romance and her ambition, she must try to refocus and choose what comes first.
This is a good summer read and I enjoyed how the author can bring its readers to Paris. She described the famous places with accuracy and if you are planning to visit Paris one day, take note while reading! I also want to applaud her for the wonderful description of the scents mentioned in this book. It’s a whole new different world that I get to imagine. I love reading about new things and being introduced in the world of scents was a wonderful reading experience.
"It was the closest we’d come to capturing something as tangible as love in a bottle. It was a concoction of rose, cashmere wood, raspberry leaf, patchouli, freesia and blackcurrant, but lacked an element, an aroma we just couldn’t pinpoint." - The Little Perfume Shop Off The Champs-Élysées
Also, it’s a story between two lonely people who found love at the most unexpected moments of their lives. Sebastien and Del were both grieving and lonely in their own ways but the magic of scent and love will make them grow closer to each other.
"I could smell the passionfruit note of tea on his breath, the peppermint of his shampoo on his hair, and his perfume, a fresh slightly tangy Oceana."
